What is Engine Remapping?

| In Motoring Advice

Sometimes known as “chipping”, engine remapping is modifying a car’s onboard computer (ECU) with new software that affects the performance.

The engine is usually limited when a car rolls off the production line. This is to make sure that the car has a good balance of performance to fuel consumption and performs how the manufacturer wants. Remapping allows you to unlock more power by removing some of the restrictions placed on the car.

At Cargiant, we have put together a simple guide to how this is done and what it affects if you are looking to get this done to your car!

How is Engine Remapping Done?

Engine remapping is done by altering the software that has been installed by a manufacturer. The process of doing this involves reading the existing ECU and adjusting various parameters to increase various features. This means overwriting the existing code and removing certain restrictions.

However, this isn’t something that should be done yourself. Leave it to the professionals. If you want to get engine remapping done, find a reputable remapping garage. If you tackle this yourself on a new car, you could be left with a very high repair bill if it doesn’t go to plan.

It’s important to note that if you are driving a car made before the 2000s, they don’t usually have the remapping software required.

What Can You Change With Engine Remapping?

There are multiple different things that you can change with engine remapping. These include:

  • Horsepower increase
  • Torque increase
  • Improve fuel economy
  • Improve throttle response
  • Improve power delivery

Benefits of Engine Remapping

Engine remapping is a low-cost way to improve your car’s performance. Although prices do vary, the average cost of this is around £200 to £400 depending on the garage. Having this done is one of the most affordable ways to improve your car’s performance.

With engine remapping, you do not need to make physical changes to improve the performance of your engine. Sometimes this is the other way around. Some aftermarket parts may require remapping to make sure that they are still running and working the best that they can.

These changes aren’t always permanent and can be reversed. If you decide that you want to reinstall the software, nine times out of ten you can. However, this will not reinstate the warranty that you could have voided.

How Does Engine Remapping Affect Your Car Policies?

Insurance

If you remap your engine, you will need to declare this to your policy provider. This may result in an increase in your premium and a policy change fee.

Warranty

If you are remapping your engine that isn’t approved by your manufacturers or approved dealership, this can cause your warranty to become invalid. However, if you are driving an older car, this might not be a concern.

Selling Your Car

If your engine has been remapped, this could be an issue when selling your car. However, this depends on whether the buyer is happy with these changes.
