Changes to road tax rates are coming in April

Changes to road tax rates are coming in April

For the majority of motorists, the amount of Vehicle Excess Duty (VED) or road tax as it’s commonly known will raise for the third straight year. The increase will be introduced on 1st April and will see drivers charged between £5 - £65 extra a year, in line with current rates of inflation.

2017 Change in how vehicles were charged

In 2017, the way drivers pay road tax was completely changed. If a vehicle was first registered on or after the 1st April 2017, the owner would be charged their first year’s tax based on the vehicle’s emissions This ranges from £0 for zero emissions electric cars to £2,070 for the most heavily polluting vehicles. After the first year, motorists will then be charged a standard yearly rate of either £0 for an electric vehicle, £130 for an alternative fuel vehicle (hybrid) or £140 for a standard petrol or diesel vehicle.

For vehicles with a list price of over £40,000, a £310 yearly extra cost is added to the standard rate from its second year of ownership for the next 5 years. After the 5 years have been paid, the rate will revert to the same amounts as lower priced vehicles.

Diesel vehicles are charged one band higher than their emissions state.
