VW Scirocco Review

| In Car Reviews

Cargiant Price Range: £7,999 – £15,299

The VW Scirocco is a sleek compact that competes with many sporty coupe in the market. It’s an economic option that offers plenty of room for a conventional closed two-door.

If you’re looking for a reason to love the Scirocco, the great thing is there’s a version to appeal to a wide range of drivers, you have the option of a lower priced 1.4 litre petrol and a tax-efficient 2.0 litre diesel. The Scirocco is ideal for those looking for a car that has great style but also delivers on substance. For those who demand plenty more from their car’s performance, there’s the high-performance R version with a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

There’s a middle range Scirocco which proves to be great value, car buyers opt for the 2.0 litre petrol engine, however the 1.4 petrol is a perfectly capable option. You can also consider the 2.0 litre engine which really brings out the best out of the Scirocco’s sporty look.

With a wide range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, Volkswagen Scirocco performance impresses regardless of which motor is under the bonnet.

A slick-six speed gearbox is standard while there's the option of an excellent semi-automatic system called DSG, with six ratios – or seven on the 1.4 TSI. Fuel consumption is a respectable 33 MPG, so without spending too much you can enjoy the firm suspension you’d want from a performance car.

The Scirocco shares its name with the Mediterranean wind, Volkswagon makes numerous references to this with its marketing but even more so with recent designs. This is also reflected in very distinctive bumpers – the front one fitted with low blades similar to the Golf GTI. There’s a LED daytime running lights and the fog lamps are new as well. On the side you will find a fresh alloy wheel design and for those of you who really look out for the detail, you’ll find the addition of bold creases at the back of the Scirocco which gives the rear another modern edge. This is finished off by more another set of LED lights in the back. The Scirocco sits on firm suspensions and a noticeably bigger alloy wheels.

The standard Scirocco comes well equipped with ESP stability control, a leather steering wheel and gear lever, 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, semi-automatic air conditioning, an alarm, front sports seats (with height adjustment), automatic lights, electric windows, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, hill hold function (only on DSG models) ACC adaptive chassis control (optional on the 1.4-litre TSI), a trip computer, rain sensitive wipers, a six-CD changer with an auxiliary socket and 50/50 split folding rear seats.

Our Verdict

The Scirocco is based on the VW Golf, but with the promise of far sleeker looks and a sporty driving experience.  The Scirocco promises the best of both worlds, which comes as no surprise as Scirocco drivers are very pragmatic people. There is also a visible injection of style that makes it one of the most desirable options to test drive. According to our sale experts, its striking features of the Scirocco makes it a great alternative for drivers looking for a compact hatchback with plenty of bite.
