Originally launched back in 2006, the Nissan Qashqai became an immediate hit with the UK public. It sparked a surge in popularity for small SUVs which has only grown through the years after it’s launch. The Sunderland built Qashqai benefits from generous equipment levels, frugal engines and spacious interiors.
Features
Both first and second-generation Nissan Qashqais come very generously equipped. Bluetooth, air conditioning, USB connection and cruise control are standard features, even on the entry level Visia and Acenta models. Moving through the trim levels, mid-range cars add Nissan’s touchscreen entertainment system with satellite navigation and DAB radio, along with parking sensors and climate control amongst other features. It the premium end of the scale, a reverse camera and 360-degree cameras, glass panoramic roof, leather interior and heated seats can be found. There’s even a 7-seater Qashqai+2 for those for need even more space.
Engine, Performance and Drive
As you’d expect, the Nissan Qashqai comes with a choice of economical petrol and diesel engines, smooth manual and automatic gearboxes and two or four-wheel drive options. If diesel is your preference, you have the choice of a 1.6, 2.0 and manual only 1.5 litre engine. The engines are capable of around 55-74 mpg combined, depending on gearbox and drivetrain.
There are three petrol engines to choose from, a 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 litre unit. All engines are available with manual or automatic gearboxes and the largest 2.0 box is available with two and four-wheel drive. Expect to receive around 44-48mpg combined depending from the smaller engines and 37mpg from the largest 2.0 unit.
Reliability and Safety
The majority of Japanese brands are renowned for their reliability, and Nissan are no exception. The second-generation model recently scored highly in the AutoExpress Driver Power survey, an article ranks the best vehicles to own by listening the drivers. It considers everything from boot space to reliability and the Qashqai scored 91.52%.
The Qashqai scored 5* in its Euro NCAP test, the highest score a vehicle can achieve. It has 6 airbags as standard, DR and PAS seat belt reminders, ABS and Brake Assist System (BAS). The second-generation models also have Hill Start Assist (HAS).
