6 questions to ask when buying a used car

For the majority of people, buying a car is the second most expensive purchase they will make, so it’s no surprise it can seem a little daunting for some. However, by asking these six simple questions, buying a used car can be stress-free.

 

  1. Has the car been through a thorough safety check?
    Any reputable car dealership will conduct thorough safety checks with all their used vehicles before offering them for sale. Knowing that your vehicle has passed these checks and is road safe will give you peace of mind and confidence in your choice.

 

  1. Has the car had an HPI check?
    Formally known as Hire Purchase Information, an HPI check should be carried out by the dealership and can tell potential buyers a lot about the history of a vehicle. It will show whether the car has ever been written off, stolen or showing a mileage discrepancy. It will also alert you if there is any outstanding finance from a previous agreement. If you prefer, you can do an HPI checkat home via the HPI website.

 

  1. How long is the car’s warranty?
    Although not a legal requirement, the majority of dealerships will offer some form of warranty on their used vehicles. This may be included in the price of the car or as an additional charge for mechanical breakdown insurance from a reputable company. Before buying the car, make sure you are clued up on what will and won’t be covered. 

 

  1. Does the car have any service history?
    All cars need to be regularly maintained in order to keep them in good working order. Finding out about a car’s service history will give you a strong indication of how well looked after it has been. All cars will have either have a service book or online service history which the retailer should be able to show you.

 

  1. What payment options are available?
    There are two ways to pay for a car, a one-off payment or by spreading the cost over a number of years. The idea of handing over thousands of pounds in a one-off transaction is unrealistic for many people, so a high percentage of buyers now choose finance. This allows you to spread the cost of the car over a longer period. 

 

  1. Can I test drive the car?
    You need to make sure you are comfortable with your choice of car, so although it is not essential, we strongly recommend you take a test drive. This helpful checklist points out what to look for whilst you are on a test drive.
